Today, several French newspapers have reported that George Chaulet, who wrote the Fantomette series of books passed away last week. The 49 books told the story of a schoolgirl who at night time would fight crime and solve mysteries under the mysterious secret identity of Fantomette. The first book was released back in the 60s and was part of the very popular Bibliotheque Rose range of books (which also included Oui-Oui (Noddy) and the latest Fantomette book was released last year. She has been considered a feminist icon for young girls. Unlike Wonder-Woman, she didn’t have any super-powers. She spoke several languages, was very independent and solely relied on a couple of gadgets to get her out of any tricky situations. And her outfit was fantastic!
I spent hours reading these books when I was younger. Tonight I feel as though a bit of my childhood has gone.
